Real Fostering Experiences, Foster Carers, Young People and Social Workers Share

What is fostering really like, from all sides?

In this video, you hear from foster carers, young people with lived experience of foster care, and fostering social workers, all sharing their honest experiences of fostering and what it has meant to them.

Foster carers talk about the nervousness of welcoming their first child into their home, often comparing it to bringing home a newborn baby. They share the emotions, the uncertainty and the learning that comes with those early days.

You will hear about first experiences, things many of us take for granted. Birthday parties, trips to the cinema, days at the beach and family holidays. One young person explains how they could not understand why someone would take them on holiday, or why they would be included in something like that at all. For foster carers, being able to give children these experiences is incredibly powerful and meaningful.

There are also honest reflections. One foster carer talks about how lovely fostering is, but how hard it can be when children move on. She shares that even when children return home, they often remain part of her life, with ongoing contact and lasting relationships.

A fostering social worker talks about the pride she feels in being part of fostering and supporting families. She explains how fostering makes a real difference to children’s lives, and how being part of that journey stays with you.

Fostering is not always easy, but for many people it is one of the most meaningful ways to give back. It can change children’s lives, and it often changes carers’ lives too.

We do not know that you are interested in fostering unless you come forward. There is no pressure. We are not sales people. Hull Fostering is the fostering service for Hull City Council, and our role is simply to talk to you, answer questions and help you understand whether fostering could be right for you.
