Egypt's role in the Gaza crisis is complex and shaped by political, security, and regional considerations. While Egypt shares a border with Gaza through the Rafah Crossing and has historically played a mediator role between Hamas and Israel, its actions often reflect a balance between humanitarian concerns and national interests. One reason Egypt is cautious about fully opening the Rafah border is security. Egypt has faced militant threats in its Sinai Peninsula, and officials fear that an uncontrolled flow of people and goods could allow weapons or extremists to infiltrate. Moreover, Egypt has a tense relationship with Hamas, the governing authority in Gaza, which is linked to the Muslim Brotherhood — a political movement that Egypt’s government, particularly under President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, views as a major threat. This ideological opposition makes Egypt reluctant to empower Hamas politically or militarily. Additionally, Egypt is under pressure from international players, including the United States and Gulf allies, to maintain stability in the region and not escalate tensions with Israel. While Egypt often condemns Israeli aggression and facilitates humanitarian aid, it also tries to maintain its peace treaty with Israel, which includes security coordination. Egypt’s role as a mediator also requires it to appear neutral, avoiding overt support that could damage its credibility with other actors.
