If you are wary about running databases on Kubernetes, I empathize with you. As Percona started working on our database operators a few years ago, I just couldn't understand why someone would consider moving the most stateful-centered part of their application to an environment that has been designed around and thrives on being stateless. Over time, after experimenting with it and working with customers who wanted to pursue this path, I understood I had to stop worrying about server stability - pods are restarted and rebuilt without further notice - and focus instead on service availability. And business continuity.
In this presentation, I will show how the Percona Operator for MySQL works in practice and delivers on those two promises. I'll start by covering the migration of a database service to a new Kubernetes cluster and then explore what the environment created by the operator has to offer, including the choice between two proxy solutions, HAproxy and ProxySQL, and my favorite feature, integrated backups, which cover binary logs as well. I will conclude by exploring the scalability of our solution: can the operator really take advantage of the elasticity features of Kubernetes?
