The one-eyed giants of Greek mythology may have originated from an unusual source: fossilized elephant skulls. When ancient Greeks discovered dwarf elephant remains in Mediterranean caves, particularly on islands like Sicily, Crete, and Cyprus, they encountered something baffling. These skulls, measuring around 40 centimeters across, featured a large central opening where the trunk once attached, but without knowledge of elephant anatomy, this nasal cavity appeared to be a single massive eye socket in the center of the forehead.
