In this episode of Finnish Photo Fridays, host Matt DiRisio (author of Finnish Mosin-Nagant Three Line Rifle to Ukko Pukka) dives into a fascinating image from October 1941 at the Utti garrison training center.
The photo features Finnish soldiers—likely new conscripts—performing close-order drill with a firearm most Finnish troops desperately tried to avoid: the Italian Carcano Model 1938 rifle.
Finland purchased nearly 100,000 of these Carcano rifles from Italy due to a critical arms shortage during the Winter War. Despite being a much-needed weapon, the m/38 (nicknamed the "Terni" after its most common manufacturer) may have served its greatest purpose in Finnish service simply by existing and allowing more Mosin-Nagant variants to be pushed to the frontlines.
