Resene FX Faux Rust Effect creates a weathered steel-style finish for a fraction of the cost – and in just a matter of just hours. It’s a waterborne coating that can be painted on both exterior and interior surfaces, and once applied, the rust look will continue to develop over time. It looks particularly great on outdoor art and indoor feature walls.

Follow this step-by-step process to create your own bold feature wall.

You will need:
• Resene FX Faux Rust Effect (basecoat and activator)
• Resene Waterborne Broadwall Wallboard Sealer
• Drop cloth
• Paint tray and roller
• Extension pole
• Paint pot
• Large paintbrush
• Spray bottle (optional)

Step-by-step instructions:

Step 1: Prep your wall by applying Resene Waterborne Broadwall Wallboard Sealer using a roller with an extension pole.

Step 2: Decant the Resene FX Faux Rust Effect basecoat into a paint tray and apply one coat with a roller and extension pole. When that’s dry, apply a second coat.

Step 3: Once the basecoat is dry, decant the FX Faux Rust Effect activator into a paint pot and then use a large brush to apply it all over the wall. The messier your application is, the better and more authentic the rust effect will be. You can be as creative as you like.

Step 4: After one hour you will see the rust effect starting to kick in – the majority will have developed in 12 hours. You can spray clean water on it for a deeper rust effect, and regular water misting will deepen the rust effect colour.

Step 5: You’re done – step back and admire your dazzling new feature wall!
