This was released almost a year before Avatar and for people below a certain age was probably the first 3D movie they ever saw.

It was directed by Henry Selick who also made The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. It looks like he went to Pixar after and largely got lost in development hell. The studio however, Laika, went on to create a stunning series of 3D stop-motion features.

A modern classic of a film. Surprisingly, this is not the first stop-motion to be filmed in 3D. That honor likely belongs to a short about car assembly called In Tune With Tomorrow (later retitled Motor Rhythm) from 1939. And there were other stop-motion shorts made at various points in time however I cannot think of an earlier full-length stop-motion movie made in 3D.
