(13 Jun 1979) RR7924B AVIATION THE GROUNDING OF THE DC-10
McDonnell Douglas DC-10 airliners have been grounded
throughout the world following the crash of a DC-10 at
Chicago on May 25th 1979. All 273 people aboard were killed.
The plane lost its port engine on take-off, and a thorough
investigation has been launched. The pylon system joining the
huge turbo-fan engines to the wings is suspect, and cracks and
metal fatigue have been found in similar models. Critics say
evidence of a faulty design has been available for at least four
years, but ignored. They also suggest the aircraft does not
have enough safety features, resulting in possible total loss
if the plane gets into difficulties. There are over 270 DC-10s
around the world, and there is a possibility they may never fly
again.
