On this chapter of Randi goes solo backpacking- a 2 day, 27 mile jaunt through the Santa Cruz mountains was characterized by fog, fungus, and feline paranoia! For all I knew, mountain lions watched me through the fog as I occasionally yelled out, “I’m hiking! I’m on a trail and I’m hiking!!!” to the tune of Buddy the Elf singing loudly in the mall to initiate Christmas spirit (and in my case, to initiate bravery). Aside from the potential lurking cats, the nervous deer, and the squirrels chucking acorns at me from high up in the trees, I did not see a single soul for a majority of this hike. Which lucky for me because I did have a full on cry sesh over seeing water after having to ration for ~ 10 miles (my first time water carrying was soo anxiety inducing!). Hopefully, next time I do a water carry I will be less nervous. It’s hard to post my tears but it is the truth of what happened, so screw it!
This was my first time creating my own route using OnX Backcountry as well as my first time doing a long water carry. I learned a lot on this hike, and I really enjoyed the physicality of this hike and the fall/Twilight vibes it gave.
