Mihail Jora (1891-1971) was a prolific and successful composer, his works received many awards both domestically and internationally. He was also a conductor, a pianist, a music critic and a remarkable teacher at the Bucharest Conservatory.
Due to his international fame, he was never imprisoned, but had several confrontations with the communist authorities
Paul Constantinescu (1909-1963) was one of the most precocious Romanian composers, having had the premiere of his first opera by the age of 25. However he was constantly a target of totalitarian regime in Romania.
