How sure are you that you’re not dreaming right now? As good as the brain is at painting a vivid picture of our surroundings through the information provided by our senses, it is equally good at generating sensory experiences on its own. Sharif Kronemer, a postdoctoral fellow in the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health, is using visual illusions to learn about how the brain tricks us into seeing things that aren’t really there. His experiments could shed light on the biological origins of hallucinations and other medical conditions that affect our perceptions of the world around us.
