A seasoned stagecoach driver offers a ride to a stranded British sailor he finds alone on a dusty roadside. The sailor admits he deserted his ship in San Francisco and has been hunted ever since. Before long, a group of five men—revealed to be federal marshals—surround the coach, warning that the fugitive fled a vessel carrying bubonic plague and that they have orders to kill anyone he has come into contact with to stop the disease from spreading. Later, the driver grants a free passage to a young traveler bound for a relay station. There, the man confesses he is an escaped convict who, after learning he has less than a year to live, is desperate to spend Christmas with his wife and children. He swears he will surrender himself after the holiday, but three relentless bounty hunters are determined to claim the reward before mercy can intervene.
