A first look at Ontario's geology in virtual reality; Clark, J K; Dupont, M A; Logan, C E; Russell, H A J; Carter, T R; Brunton, F R. Geological Survey of Canada, Scientific Presentation 100, 2019; 8:56 min., https://doi.org/10.4095/321103 (Open Access).
Take a look at southern Ontario's bedrock beneath your feet in virtual reality. This animated tour of Ontario's subsurface was created from a real 3D geological model based on borehole data. Most of the borehole data used in this project was collected from Ontario's 27,000 oil, gas and salt resource boreholes. These boreholes are the only wells that consistently penetrate deep enough into the Paleozoic bedrock to collect the data necessary to build this model. During drilling rock samples, cores, and geophysical logs have also been collected and archived for a large number of wells. The rocks and records available from the Oil, Gas and Salt Resources Library (OGSR Library) in London, Ontario allow geologists to quality assure geological formations in the model.
The 3D model components were created using Leapfrog. Rendering and animation was done using Blender. Video capture of 360 live action scenes was done using a GoPro Fusion camera.
