Durga Visarjan , also known as Durga Puja Visarjan, is a significant Hindu festival that marks the end of the Durga Puja celebration. Durga Puja is dedicated to Goddess Durga, the divine mother, who is believed to have defeated the demon king Mahishasura after a fierce battle that lasted for nine days and nights.
During the festival, elaborate idols of Goddess Durga, along with her children (Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha, and Kartikeya), are worshipped in beautifully decorated pandals (temporary structures) for nine days. Devotees come together to offer prayers, perform rituals, and celebrate the victory of good over evil.
On the tenth day, which is known as Vijayadashami or Dussehra, the idols are immersed in water, symbolizing the departure of Goddess Durga and her children to their divine abode. This ritual is called Durga Visarjan. The immersion process is often accompanied by grand processions, music, dance, and fervent celebrations.
Durga Visarjan is a time of mixed emotions for devotees. On one hand, there is a sense of sadness as the goddess is bid farewell, and on the other hand, there is joy and hope, as her departure is believed to bring blessings and good fortune to the people.
