On 10 June 1944, SS soldiers destroyed the village of Oradour-sur-Glane, slaughtering 643 civilians. On the instructions of General De Gaulle it became a martyred village and has been preserved in its state of destruction as a reminder of Nazi barbarity. Some 300,000 people visit the site each year, but the ruins are now a shadow of their former selves.
