I didn’t go looking for safety. I went looking for time. After months of moving through a city that stopped functioning piece by piece, I headed back into the mountains toward a place I once worked, a fire lookout tower that was supposed to still be standing. It wasn’t. What I found instead forced me to keep walking, deeper into burned ground and empty forest, until I reached another tower most people had already failed to hold.
From up there, the world looks different. You see the dead before they hear you. You see people before they decide what you’re worth to them. And you learn fast that height doesn’t mean safety, it just means you have fewer mistakes to make. This is the story of how I took that tower, what I had to do to keep it, and what came for me when others realized someone was still alive above the trees.
