Not so much a maintenance blog this week but a look at what happens when we had major battery failure on your Amel sailboat in a foreign country with no technical support or battery suppliers.

Several traumatic, stranded weeks followed a catastrophic battery meltdown in Colombia. Our entire Victron battery bank of 8 x 24v 440ah literally melted into a solid block and we had to source replacements.

Was it a faulty Mastervolt Chargemaster or faulty Victron Battery that caused the runaway overheating.. or was it a shore power electrical surge? I never did find out, but it was one of those occasions where I actually wanted to give up on our whole sailing dream and return to land life.
