Varenna - Lake Como. A windy beautiful summer day

This time I take you with me to Lake Como, in Lombardy, in the part closest to the Lecco branch, land of one of the most famous Italian novels of all time, The Promessi Sposi by Alessandro Manzoni.
And precisely we go together to Varenna, a fishing village nestled on the eastern shore of the lake in an unparalleled geographical position with a simply breathtaking view looking towards the promontory of Bellagio, another splendid location in this area.
This charming fishing village has very ancient origins (769 after Christ) and its historic center winds its way through steep and picturesque alleys that slope down towards the lake, finding its fulcrum in the main square where the 13th century church of San Giorgio is located, splendid example of medieval Lombard architecture and the Church of San Giovanni Battista, even older, dating back to the 11th century. Both religious buildings present works and frescoes that constitute a historical and artistic heritage of incredible value.
Varenna is also known as the "village of lovers" because right here, nestled in the rock and overlooking the lake, an arch-shaped metal walkway was built totally covered with climbing plants and lush flowers that during spring and summer give this particular and unique walk a very special charm.
From here you can admire a unique panorama as far as the eye can see of Lake Como, the surrounding mountains as well as the village itself with its picturesque colored houses.
But there is another, precious jewel, of which Varenna is rightly proud, the splendid Villa Monastero, a historic building dating back to the 1500s, initially used as a monastery for the Cistercian nuns of Santa Maria Maddalena.
This splendid villa is one of the main attractions of the area for its beauty and position close to the lake, but above all for the extraordinary, wonderful botanical garden which extends for about 2 km with the presence of an incredible quantity of varieties of plants. , flowers, shrubs, from all over the world.
Villa Monastero, also known for having been the scene of the physics lessons of the Nobel laureate Enrico Fermi, is now an important Congress Center and is also used for ceremonies and even as a location for advertising.
The beauty of the landscape context in which Villa Monastero is inserted, make this place an attraction visited by over 80,000 people a year. If you pass here, you can't miss the visit.
