Hope is sometimes incredibly
elusive, especially when you
face seemingly overwhelming
circumstances. Our friend Yasar
lived a devastating cycle: a pattern
of addiction, delayed dreams,
disappointment and frustration.
But one day, going on a drive with a
friend and a chance remark created
an opportunity that changed
everything.
Yasar’s parents emigrated to
the United States from Pakistan
with a similar dream to that of so
many families—creating a better
life for their children. Getting a
college degree was a critical part of that journey, but Yasar
preferred to pursue a career in information technology and
put his education on hold. His parents were disappointed,
a nd this caused a growing rift between Yasar and his family:
resentment followed by a breakdown in their relationship.
Yasar deeply felt the absence of his family in his life and
like many others have understandably done in similar
situations, filled the void by trying to numb his pain through
self-medicating. This brought a cycle of depression and
homelessness, followed by a renewed resolve to get back
on track.
