In today’s episode of the Builder's Bench, we’re going to talk about two problems with the GM 8L90 transmission. Co-host Rino Partipilo says that at ATSG, they're seeing these problems a lot, and that both are caused by the exact same issue.
The first issue is a GM 8L90 with the complaint of neutralizing when shifting to second gear. When we drop the pan, we might see pieces of aluminum, and when we pull the transmission apart, we see the 2-3-4-6-8 drum blown apart.
The second is a transmission with uncontrollable line pressure—sometimes high, sometimes low. Opening the valve body, you can see that the worn tracks between the pump suction and secondary line circuit are cracked. This is what’s causing the line pressure issues—but the key is, what’s causing both issues?
For more information on these common 8L90 issues, including how they're connected and what to do about each, watch the video above.
