Top Thrill Dragster was a steel accelerator roller coaster built by Intamin at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, United States. It was the sixteenth roller coaster built at the park since the Blue Streak in 1964. When built in 2003, it was the first full circuit roller coaster to exceed 420 feet (120 m) in height, and was the tallest roller coaster in the world, before being surpassed by Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure in May 2005. Top Thrill Dragster, along with Kingda Ka, were known as the only strata coasters in existence. It was the second hydraulically launched roller coaster built by Intamin, following Xcelerator at Knott's Berry Farm. The tagline for Top Thrill Dragster was "Race for the Sky".
In August 2021, Top Thrill Dragster experienced a "serious accident" that occurred in the queue involving a small metal piece that dislodged from a train as it was nearing the end of its run. Although investigations finished in February 2022, exonerating Cedar Point from any wrongdoing, park officials announced that Top Thrill Dragster would remain closed for the 2022 season.
On September 6, 2022, Cedar Point officials announced on social media that "Top Thrill Dragster, as you know it, is being retired." This came after an extended closure that spanned more than one season. Officials did not provide further details other than stating they were working on a "new and reimagined ride experience". Top Thrill Dragster had accommodated 18 million riders at the time of its closure.
The ride was reimagined and rethemed to "Top Thrill 2" in time for 2024 with Zamperla as the manufacturer. This video is in Extinct Rides because the theme shown here is no longer operating, plus the new version is a triple launch coaster with Zamperla renovating the existing structure, using the existing 420 feet (130 m) hill, adding an equal sized vertical spike, as well as new trains.
