Scientists at the UW School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences' Alaska Salmon Program are driven to ensure that Bristol Bay's salmon fisheries continue to thrive as ecosystems and support the economies with which they are connected.
Faculty, undergraduate and graduates students from the College of the Environment have been collecting data for more than a half century on everything from salmon DNA to the impacts of a changing climate. The Alaska Salmon Program has helped develop a model for sustainable fisheries management—one that's emulated across the globe. Deeply rooted in history, relevant now, and with implications for the future, the work our scientists are doing in Alaska has never been more important.
