I received a box of pastel pencils for Christmas and found some time to use them for the first time this week where I did a small experiment to become familiar with my new and old pastel art supplies that I have been accumulating for years and years which I had never tried before, after being inspired by a video I recently watched from Coloring with Vicky. I was amazed to learn that you don't need that many supplies to get started, I only really needed 4 pastel pencils, 2 colored pencils, 2 pan pastel color and 1 pastel stick.
You can find a full list of supplies for Pan Pastels and Caran d'Ache Luminance pencils for portrait coloring from her video below which is what inspired me to finally get out all my supplies and give them a try.

Before getting invested in everything you need to follow the full tutorial, you can give it a go with a small amount of supplies and give them a try to experiment with technique & try different brands of products without needing to buy everything first. In hindsight I wish I had ignored all the videos recommending not to buy the Caran d'Ache pastel pencils because they are too soft (the colors were the best!) & instead of owning the full set of the more affordable Faber Castell pastel pencils, I wish I had known that I would like the full set of the Carbothello Stabilo pastel pencils better (easier learning curve if you are already used to wax or oil based pencils). I recommend limiting yourself to buying 2 of each from each brand, try them and see what you like.
