The burial of celebrated businessman and philanthropist James Musinguzi Garuga on Monday evening turned political, as Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa and ANT party president Gen. Gregory Mugisha Muntu clashed publicly over the government's role in the crumbling tea industry.
Garuga, 72, was laid to rest at 06:30 PM in his ancestral home in Mukiragiro Village, Nyarurambi Parish, Rugyeyo Sub-county, Kanungu District, after losing a battle with cancer on August 5, 2025 at Nakasero Hospital. He had been set to travel to Turkey for specialized treatment.
During the somber ceremony, religious leaders ,Rt. Rev. Onesmus Asiimwe, Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, and Rt. Rev. Dan Zoreka, Bishop of Kinkiizi Diocese — hailed Garuga as a “pillar of generosity and a fearless advocate for the voiceless.”
Mourners Demand “Free Besigye”
Drama unfolded when Proscovia Salaamu Musumba, a Front for Freedom (PFF) activist, presented an unrevealed eulogy from jailed opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye. Mourners erupted, chanting “Free Besigye!” prompting family members to ask Winnie Musumba to read the message aloud.
Besigye, through his eulogy, praised Garuga not only as a trailblazer in Uganda’s tea sector but also as a “bold voice against bad governance and nepotism.
Gen. Muntu used the occasion to accuse the government of deliberately stifling the tea sector in which Garuga had heavily invested, employing thousands.
