I just LOVE the moss stitch (also known as the linen stitch or granite stitch) - whatever you call it, it's such a simple yet effective stitch. If you can chain and make single crochet stitches (US terminology), you can do the moss stitch!

How to: chain an even number of stitches. In the fourth chain from the hook, work one single crochet, then chain one. Skip the next chain, and then repeat - one single crochet in the next chain, chain one and skip one chain.. all the way to the end of your chain, ending with one single crochet. Chain one and turn. On this row and each subsequent row, you will repeat the stitch repeat (one single crochet, chain one, skip one stitch), always working the single crochet into a chain space from the previous round. And that is the moss stitch!
