Mixing Collodion for Wet Plate Photography (Part Two)

Number two in a series of instructional videos for wet plate collodion photography.

Collodion is the basis of the process and is salted with various iodides and bromides which interact with the silver nitrate we've mixed turning it into a silver iodide on the plate and becoming light sensitive. It becomes the light sensitive emulsion of your plates and its correct mixture is very critical to the success of the process.

This video is a step by step instruction of mixing "Quick Clear" collodion, just one of the many formulas of collodion to choose from. Being that it is quick and somewhat easy, it is perfect for beginning collodionists, however care must be taken in handling of all chemistry. "Safer" recipes do exist, but come with their own special challenges that will add difficulty for the beginner. I urge all who pursue the process to find what is best and most comfortable for them to use.
