Empty agricultural chemical containers were a disposal problem for in New Zealand until all the chemical suppliers agreed to provide users with an environmentally safer solution than on-farming dumping or burning.

The Agrecovery product stewardship program they began collects the triple-rinsed containers from urban and rural collection centres throughout and has these recycled in New Zealand - because the empty containers are very bulky it was essential to be able to reduce the volume efficiently and without compromising the value of the plastic.

Pioneer Group developed the fully enclosed trailer mobile shredding unit and provided the Agrecovery contractor Envirowaste with two systems. These unique self-contained systems have onboard generators and deploy 12m of telescoping conveyors that ‘follow’ the operators into the collection containers and make emptying them very efficient. Using a 50hp low-speed single shaft shredder HDPE containers up to 200 litres are turned into a valuable flake that is loaded into bulk bags.

The on-board weighing system enables operators to report recovery rates by site and to dispatch known tonnages to the recycler. The self-contained, low noise, low maintenance systems are also designed to comply with a Category 3 PL D safety rating. Processing at 850x 20-litre jerry cans/hour or 80x 200-litre drums/hour the units enable operators to clear a 40’ container in 2 hours.
