📌 Brief History of Dar es Salaam
Dar es Salaam's history began in 1862 when the Sultan of Zanzibar founded it as a small port on the site of Mzizima, naming it the "House of Peace" (Dar es Salaam). It grew under German colonization as the capital of German East Africa (1891-1916) and then became the administrative center for British Tanganyika after WWI. After Tanganyika's independence in 1961, it remained the capital of the newly formed Tanzania in 1964, a role it still largely plays despite Dodoma being designated the official capital in 1973, serving as Tanzania's economic and cultural hub with a rich blend of African, German, British, and Asian influences.
