Today, we have a pretty good understanding of volcanology––that’s the study of volcanoes, lava, magma, and the related geological, geophysical and geochemical phenomena.
But until the 20th century, very little was known about how we should respond to volcanic eruptions and what they looked like up close…That is, until a French woman named Katia Krafft erupted onto the scene in the mid-1900s, becoming one of the most important volcanologists of all time.
