A group of computer scientists, economists and celebrities released a public letter (https://superintelligence-statement.org/) Wednesday Oct. 22, 2025, calling for a ban on “AI Superintelligence”. Shomir Wilson, associate professor of information and sciences and technology and Director of the Human Language Technologies Lab at Penn State, says a ban on superintelligence is inherently difficult, because there is no set definition for “superintelligence”. Wilson says our technology isn’t to the level of threatening humanity yet, but he acknowledges it is close enough that people are worried about it.
