Saint Francis Xavier was a pioneering Jesuit missionary whose life embodied zeal, sacrifice, and global evangelization. Born in 1506 in Navarre, Spain, Francis Xavier became one of the founding members of the Society of Jesus, deeply inspired by Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Saint Francis Xavier’s spiritual legacy lives on in his patronage of missions and his example of faith-driven courage, and tireless service.
Goa's devotion to Saint Francis Xavier is profound, with the saint being affectionately known as "Goencho Saib" (Lord of Goa). His mortal remains are enshrined in a silver casket at the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa.
Every year on December 3rd, the anniversary of his death is celebrated as a grand feast day in Goa, drawing thousands of pilgrims to Old Goa in an atmosphere of deep spiritual reverence. This devotion is further intensified by the public exposition of his relics, a rare event that traditionally occurs once every ten years, during which millions of pilgrims gather to venerate his body, seeking blessings and healing.
