Ghent, Belgium: the City and the Canals

Ghent is located half way between Brussels and Bruges. Ghent is about 55km northwest of Brussels and very easily reached by train. The train ride from Brussels takes approximately 35 minutes, and stops at the Ghent St Peter's station. Ghent is known for its building and peaceful Leie River, which flows through the lovely city of Ghent. My first stop in Ghent was the Geeraard de Duivelsteen.
The Geeraard de Duivelsteen is situated by the side of one of the canals and is a 13th-century gothic architecture building which served as defense of the
Portus Ganda, Ghent's port. Right next to the Geeraard de Duivelsteen is the Monument of the Van Eyck Brothers at the Maaseikplein.
Further down, I walked to the Saint Bavo's Cathedral [Sint-Baafskathedraal]. The Saint Bavo's Cathedral is the home to Van Eycks' painting, the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb. This 16th Century Cathedral is known for its stunning Gothic architecture, the impressive artworks, the marble statues and the grand organ. Right after visiting the cathedral, my next stop was just a few meters away, The Belfry of Ghent. Situated between the St Bavo's Cathedral and St Nicholas Church. It is a historic tower in Ghent and symbolizes
the city's independence and wealth during the Middle Ages. This 92 meter tower is also know for its' panoramic view of Ghent. After my visit to the Belfry tower and admired the panoramic views of the city, I visited the St Nicholas' Church then walked over the Saint Michael's Bridge. Next to the St Nicholas' church, the is a square and a market. From the Saint Michael's bridge, there was a beautiful view of the river and the surrounding beautiful architecture. Right at the end of the St Michael's bridge is the Church of St Michael. From Saint Michael's Church I walk by the river Leie, until I reach the Gravensteen [The Castle of Counts].
