This riveting performance from Bremen’s StuBu Club captures James Booker in the midst of a transformative chapter in his career — his first sustained foray into European concert halls, clubs, and jazz festivals. Recorded just days after his acclaimed Hamburg shows that would become The Piano Prince from New Orleans, this set finds Booker in peak form: virtuosic, eccentric, and unfiltered.
Promoted and managed in Europe by Norbert Hess, a German blues enthusiast and cultural impresario, Booker’s 1976 tour marked the beginning of his rebirth as a cult figure overseas. Hess arranged a string of live dates that not only introduced European audiences to Booker’s singular blend of New Orleans R&B, jazz, classical, and gospel, but also ensured that these ephemeral performances were documented — often more carefully than any of his U.S. sessions at the time.
