Interlake Steamship Company's state-of-the-art, U.S. built freighter Mark W. Barker heads downbound in the Welland Canal, as she approaches the Allanburg Bridge. The Barker was taking a load of salt from Cleveland, OH to Ogdensburg, NY.
Construction began on the 639 foot river-class freighter in 2019, at the Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay, WI and she was launched in 2022 as the first freighter built on the Great Lakes since 1983. Interestingly, the Barker's self-unloader was originally built in 1982 for the SS Middletown and when that vessel was scrapped her self-unloader was saved and installed on the Barker, while she was under construction.
Recorded on December 20th, 2025.
