STORYLINE:
Clashes between protesters and police continued into a fifth day on Thursday in the restive Egyptian city of Port Said.
Stone throwing demonstrators faced off with riot police who stood barring access to a state security building.
Violence in the city has left six people dead since Sunday.
Riot police wearing face masks fired tear gas at the protesters.
At one point men joined hands to form a human chain in an attempt to create a barrier between the police and the demonstrators.
Furious at the president and the security forces, residents of Port Said, at the Mediterranean end of the Suez Canal, have been waging a campaign of protests and strikes amounting to an outright revolt against the central government.
The latest violence comes as an Egyptian court on Wednesday ordered the suspension of parliamentary elections scheduled to begin in April, opening a legal battle likely to delay the vote.
The decision deepens the political crisis between President Mohammed Morsi and his opponents that has polarised the nation for months.
The new confusion surrounding the election underlined the paralysis gripping Egypt, between political deadlock, infighting among state institutions, a faltering economy and a wave of protests, strikes and clashes against Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood that has spiralled for months around the country.
