Hello, neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer, and today we're taking a look at the B&W Companion Sliding Fifth Wheel for OEM-prepped Ford trucks. Now, today we have it in a 2024 Ford F-250. Now if you have the factory prep, or puck system as they call it, on your Ford, this is gonna be a great option, especially with those short beds because of the sliding function. And if you've towed fifth wheels before, you know that when you start to make tight turns with those short bed trucks, you can run the risk of damaging the cab corners with that fifth wheel hitting the truck. Well, the great thing about having a sliding fifth wheel means you can still keep your short bed truck and not have to worry about hitting those cab corners because when you make those tight turns, you can slide the head back, giving you more clearance. (metal thudding) Now in that sliding back position, you gain 12 inches of travel, and that's gonna make the world a difference when you get yourself into a tight situation where you just can't turn anymore but you really can't get out of there, sliding this is gonna allow you to get that clearance, make that tight turn, and get out of that situation.
Now, besides the fact that this drops into that factory prep package and you also have the sliding feature, it has a lot of great features that the B&W fifth wheels always have and really the quality shines all the way through. All of their towing products are really thought out and just well-made. There's no rattle or anything built up, and that's something that's also just kind of a create your comfort that you don't realize is there's urethane that's built in all of this. So other fifth wheels just kind of slop around. And you're gonna hear that when it's not loaded as that metal just hits bumps and whatnot, you're gonna get that all translated to the cab of your truck.
Where this one, there's a little bit of chain movement here, but overall, you're not hearing a whole lot of clunking. As far as latching up to your kingpin, you have two large jaws here that are gonna wrap 360 degrees, been latched, and you can also see, you'll know that it's aligned and ready to be coupled when you have this pin be able to drop in place, and that's gonna keep everything tidy. And speaking of just heavy duty overall, you have a nice gray powder coat finish that's standard with the B&W that's gonna hold up long term and look really good, but also the weight capacities are gonna be important as well. And this one is great with a gross trailer weight rating of 20,000 pounds and a vertical load limit of 5,000 pounds. Now the name companion comes from the fact that you can have this head separated from the base.
And the nature of all sliding fifth wheels, they're all gonna be heavy, and that's due to the large footprint that they need to have that sliding feature. And while this one's handle operated to get that slide, you do have some other ones that'll do it for you, like the Demco Autoslide, which is a really great system. But when it comes to getting your truck bed back and taking out your fifth wheel, that's not one that you're gonna want to take out a bunch. This one's not too bad, and the main reason because of that Companion name, you can simply pull the pins out here that act as a safety latch to make sure that the head doesn't come off. And real easy, you just grab these handles, you can slide this head off.
(metal clanking) And just removing that head takes off a significant amount of weight that allows you to be able to get this base off with probably in an extra set of hands to be able to do that. But pretty easy here in this OEM prep package, you will need to adjust tension, depending if your truck's been used quite a bit as far as that puck system. There's just a castellated nut and cotter pin. But once you get the tension dialed in, you just have this linchpin that locks both handles into place. We'll just simply slide these out, do that on the other side, and then you can get this base removed. Something that I really like about this system here is gonna be the height adjustment. You have some threaded holes behind here. Here we have it in the middle configuration, but you're able to lower this down or raise it up. It kind of just depends on your RV that you're hook
