The 80s Gay Paradox

80s music has been known for its subversive and overt queerness. From camp musicians like Motley Crue, Prince, and The Cure, to out stars like Elton John, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, and Jermaine Stewart, the 1980s produced a plethora of iconic music and performances. Yet, the 80s were also known for its extreme conservatism, including the War on Drugs, the Satanic Panic, and of course, the homophobic response to the AIDS crisis. Today we look back at the time period with a questioning gaze– how could these camp aesthetics coexist within the political culture of the time– that’s the question that I’m going to try and answer today.
