In 2008, Russia launched a brutal war against its southerly neighbour - Georgia.
The result? The breakaway territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Why did Russia split these territories off of Georgia? Geopolitical leverage.
Fundamentally, by breaking off Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Russia crushed Georgia's hopes of joining NATO, and limited the scope of its potential for better foreign relations with the West.
