Daigoji Temple is about 30 minutes from Kyoto Station by train and subway.
It is the head temple of the Daigo school of Shingon Buddhism and was founded in the Heian period (794-1185).
The temple was founded by Rigen Daishi Seiho, a disciples of Kukai's disciples, as a mountain temple of Shingon esoteric Buddhism. Daigoji Temple is one of the most historic temples in Kyoto, covering an extremely large area of the entire mountain.
It is famous for cherry blossom viewing party held by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in late 16th century, you can enjoy cherry blossoms in full bloom throughout the temple grounds in spring.
The temple precincts consist of "Kami-Daigo" (upper area) and "Shimo-Daigo” (lower area),
“Shimo-Daigo” further consist of three areas: Sanpo-in, Garan, and Reihokan.
