We are thrilled to share this wonderful partnership between La Crosse Polytechnic School and the Pump House Regional Arts Center for the innovative "Rat's Eye View" project! Middle school students dove into the worlds of art and sustainability through a hands-on experience with trash, specifically plastics.
The students embarked on an enlightening journey exploring the chemistry of plastics, understanding their bonding properties, and why they take so long to decompose in landfills. Each art piece is a captivating combination of an animal and a word. The animals are all native to the Coulee Region, and the accompanying words were "re-" words, inspiring the students to consider vital concepts like repurpose, repair, reduce, and rethink when handling trash.
The project gave middle schoolers a profound perspective shift toward "trash." Students learned to see discarded items as valuable resources that can be repurposed, reused, and rethought. It's amazing to witness how a seemingly random object can transform into a deer's antler or the eye of a snake. The hope is the lessons stay with the kids for a lifetime, fostering a deep commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
