The James Webb Telescope is a new technology that was created by NASA, alongside other organizations, to try to answer one question: "Where and how did the Universe as we know it come to be?" It is bound to change how we see the universe and shed new light on us. Since its launch last year, it has slowly been getting into position before it can fully start looking into the past. And now, it has recently completed a huge milestone. This brings us one step closer to unravelling one of the greatest mysteries in the world.
Hello and welcome back to our channel. In today’s video, we are going to have a look at the huge sixth milestone that was completed by the James Webb Telescope. However, before we continue, please make sure to give this video a like and subscribe to our channel for more videos. And with that said, let’s get right to it.
The James Webb Telescope has recently managed to pass yet another phase. On Friday, April 1, NASA reported that the engineers had managed to successfully align most of the instruments on the $10 billion space telescope. The telescope was launched on December 25, 2021, and it is still continuing to cool to deep-space temperatures.
The engineers were impressed at how successful the interim instrument adjustment was. They have now gotten rid of the option of realigning the secondary mirror of Webb. It was to be the next option if it was determined that anything was out of line. However, the telescope still has to undergo one last phase, which NASA terms the "multi-instrument alignment." This process is set to occur after the telescope’s final instrument cools. This last milestone is set to happen in the next few weeks. But what is so unique about this James Webb Telescope?
Most traditional telescopes, such as the one you may have had when you were young, only have a single primary mirror set to collect distant light from stars. However, the James Webb Space Telescope uses 18 mirrors. For them to capture the image that was recently released by NASA, these mirrors had to be perfectly aligned with no margin of error.
The mechanism behind this amazing telescope is segmented mirror technology. Some of the largest optical telescopes in the world have been using this technology for a couple of decades now. These include the Keck Observatory in Hawaii, which uses two 10m diameter mirrors with about 36 hexagonal segments each.
With the design of the James Webb telescope, there was another challenge. The scientists had to build a powerful enough mechanism that could help the telescope unfold and be fully extended while in space. In space, it would be facing extreme heat and cold conditions, and there would be no human assistance whatsoever.
The James Webb telescope was fitted with seven small motors, which are fixed behind each of the 18 slightly curved hexagonal mirrors. The main purpose of these motors is to move and reshape the curvature of each segment so that all 18 mirrors can be aligned to become one large mirror. Six of these mirrors were grouped into pairs. Not only that, but they were also equally distant and located around each mirror segment. These ones are the ones used to move the mirror.
After obtaining all this information, the scientists now had two crucial tasks that they needed to complete before the segments could function as a single monolithic mirror. These tasks are coarse alignment and fine alignment. But what exactly are these terms "coarse alignment" and "fine alignment"?
Before the James Webb telescope can fully fulfill its potential, quite a few more steps need to be completed. This is even though NASA is now celebrating successful testing of the NIRCam, and it is a huge breakthrough. Next up, after all this, NASA is going to have a look at how the other instruments can perform with the images of the stars. This would allow them to fine-tune the optics in those instruments even further.
In addition to all this, the instrument commissioning phase is set to start. There are three other instruments on the James Webb telescope, apart from the NIRCam. These are the NIRSpec, NIRISS, and MIRI. In the end, each of these instruments has its own function, which allows the telescope to attain clear and sharper images.
Think of it as each system having its own backup plan.
What do you think of the James Webb telescope? Do you think it can manage all this?
