Fruity & Smoky! || Ruby Silkie Irish Whiskey REVIEW

This is the Ruby Silkie from Sliabh Liag Distillers, and while this is sourced stock, they have done something really nice with it to make it a bit special. While Sliabh Liag are distilling and aging their own stock of whiskey, they are blending and releasing sourced whiskey under the Silkie brand.

It’s a blend, made up of 70% Grain whiskey, and 30% malted whiskey, a portion of which has been peated to 55ppm, which when triple distilled, results in a spirit with a peat characteristic of about 22ppm.

The whiskey was then blended and finished for about 6 months in ruby port casks which imparted a lovely, rich colour and flavour to the whiskey. This is the cask strength version of the release, which comes in at 62.5% ABV, but there is a regular strength version of the release which comes in at 46% ABV.

So, let’s get to tasting it!

Ruby Silkie Tasting Notes

Nose
It's got a lovely bright balance of fresh red berries, sweet grains and deep peat smoke, balanced against a rich brown sugar and vanilla backbone of buttercream frosting, with a little bit of buttered popcorn the more I sat with it.

Palate
Again, the palate has a great balance of sweet and smoky notes, reminding me of victoria sponge, but smoky! The smoke is not savoury or medicinal, but just a nicely rich peat smoke.

Finish
The finish is long, as you would expect from a peated, port finished cask strength whiskey, but the high ABV doesn't give any burn, just a nice, rich length to those same fruity, creamy and smoky notes.


Overall, I really like this whiskey. I’m starting to appreciate peated whiskeys more and more, and I’ve always enjoyed a port finish, so there was a lot for me to love here! This does come in at cask strength, so it might have more flavour than the 46% version, but either way, it is packed full of rich sweet, fruity and smoky notes!
