I had my guitar with me for a journey on the Bluebell Steam Railway (in East Sussex, England) and took the opportunity to record a few train-themed songs. More of the songs I played will follow this video. Thank you Kay for recording this video during a sometimes bumpy and noisy ride. We were sitting in a 100 year old carriage being pulled by a wonderful, old steam locomotive.
Elizabeth 'Libba' Cotten wrote 'Freight Train' around 1908 when she was just a teenager, but did not begin performing publicly and recording until she was in her 60s when she was 'discovered' by the folk-singing, Seeger family, for whom she worked as a housekeeper.
In 1957, at the height of the skiffle craze, this partially re-written version of Freight Train was a hit for the Chas McDevitt Skiffle Group, with Nancy Whiskey singing. The version I play here is based on that skiffle version. A couple of years ago I recorded a fingerpicked version of the song, based on the Libba Cotten original.
