The Axe is a two-passenger eVTOL personal aircraft with the option for people to order a hybrid-electric powertrain for longer ranges. The company expects people to use the aircraft for daily commuting, shopping, and leisure air travel. The all-electric version of the aircraft has a cruising speed of 161 km/h (100 mph) and a range of 161 km (100 miles). With the hybrid-electric powertrain, the range is expected to be 322 km (200 miles). The aircraft weighs 182 kg (401 lb) empty, has a maximum payload of 172 kg (379 lb), and has a maximum takeoff weight of 600 kg (1,323 lb).
The aircraft has four propellers and eight electric motors located at the tips of the canard wings. Having eight electric motors increases the aircraft’s redundancy and reliability. There is a canopy over the cockpit that provides excellent all-round visibility for the pilot and passenger. The aircraft's superstructure is made of carbon fiber composite, which provides low weight and high strength fuselage and wings. The propellers are fixed angle and attached to the fixed wings, which reduces the complexity of the aircraft and increases the safety of the aircraft. Reducing the complexity of an aircraft also reduces manufacturing costs and maintenance costs.
The aircraft has a vertical stabilizer at the tail. The aircraft has a fixed wheeled landing gear, which reduces the complexity of the aircraft. The wheeled landing gear is an important feature that provides the pilot or ground crew with a very easy way to maneuver the aircraft on the ground. Simplicity, redundancy, safety and speed are the basic elements of the aircraft. Traveling by air greatly increases the speed at which passengers can reach their destination. If the aircraft loses power, the aircraft can land by gliding and landing on the fixed tricycle landing gear.
Having canard wings is a very practical design for an aircraft, as it increases the range of the aircraft, making the aircraft more usable for many more people. Additionally, the overall simplified design of the aircraft will allow the aircraft to be certified faster and less costly than newer VTOL aircraft designs. Once the aircraft certification process begins, the company expects its aircraft to be certified within two years.
Some of the aircraft’s safety features include a quad-redundant control system that stabilizes the aircraft in hover and transition zones, and an emergency ballistic parachute. The aircraft can glide onto a road or runway without power and land on its wheeled landing gear. The aircraft has an advanced autonomous landing system that allows the aircraft to land automatically in emergency situations. The aircraft features deck roll and pitch motion detection and compensation technology, making it extremely easy to land on yachts and ships.
Skyfly notes that if you can fly a drone, you can learn to fly the Axe VTOL aircraft in about an hour, as the controls are similar to a drone. The company estimates the aircraft will sell for £150,000.00 (US$180,566.00). The company expects its aircraft to enter production in 2024.
