Aluminum Grinding - About Abrasives

I'm doing a short series on some of the tools and methods I use for creating my ground aluminum art. While the items presents aren't the absolute final answer, it's just info that I've come across in the past years while making art. I don't go into tools and techniques on this, just a basic "what I know" about the abrasives I use for my art.
It should be noted that the color coding of materials I mentioned seems to vary within companies. As Scotchbrite (3m) pads go, Maroon is a coarser one, while blue is, as I understand it, a finer material. It's best to check with what manufacturer has to say about their own products to determine what the actual coarseness of an item is.
