The characteristic features of a person with HHS are: • marked hypovolaemia • measured or calculated serum osmolality usually ≥320 mOsm/kg • marked hyperglycaemia (≥30 mmol/L) • without significant hyperketonaemia (ketones ≤3.0 mmol/L) • without significant acidosis (pH ≥7.3 and blood or serum bicarbonate ≥15.0 mmol/L
