Thecodontion (Italy) - Supercontinent (Album 2020)

The monstrous debut record of Italian Black/Death act, Thecodontion.
If Thecodontion's debut demo and "Jurassic" EP weren't already original enough or showcased a unique sound in the Black/Death or War Metal scene, "Supercontinent" only comes to empathize and placing them even more apart of that sound. Not only further expanding their lyrical themes into even more remote, ancient and megalithic themes, centered around Earth's earliest geological states, but also exploring further with sound, with more dynamic and atmospheric drum patterns, gut-wrenching ominous vocals, superb and crushing riffing, much more volatile and diverse in both tempo and structure and incorporating epic bass solos, wailing and undulating through the lithosphere of Thecodontion's sound. Bass leads that bare a very distinct vibe, somewhat reminiscing of old school Prog Rock or even 90's Death/Doom bands.

To add up to all that, the superb art made by Stefan of Chaos Echœs perfectly binds together both sound and theme creating the perfect formula for a stellar album. Some of the best Black/Death of recent years in my book, and will be hard to top as far as Extreme Metal goes this year.
