Timanfaya National Park & Wine from a Volcanic Crater 🇮🇨 Lanzarote Travel

Come with us as we explore Lanzarote's Timanfaya National Park, learn the island's volcanic history and taste delicious organic wine from the land born of fire and lava!

We started early to try and beat the crowds as this visiting Timanfaya National Park for a bus tour around the volcanic landscape is one of the most popular things to do on the island. We recommend getting to the entrance for the time the park opens, if not earlier (the park opens at 9am and when we arrived at 9:05 there was already a queue!).

Before long, we were on a bus and travelling through the volcanic heartland of Lanzarote, learning the history of the island and National Park as we went. Lanzarote rose up from the ocean about 25 million years ago as a result of the accumulation of material from repeated eruptions!

The otherworldly landscape we found ourselves in was forged during the eruptions of the 18th and 19th centuries, when molten lava and ash engulfed entire villages and reshaped huge swathes of Lanzarote.

Las Montañas del Fuego, or Mountains of Fire, were at the centre of this devastation. The soaring temperatures of molten lava initially destroyed all life in its path, and even today just metres below the surface temperatures of 600 degrees Celsius are recorded! In spite of this, succulent plants and hardy mosses have now taken root in the volcanic soil, bringing life once more and slowly reclaiming the seemingly inhospitable environment.

I’m not usually a massive fan of bus tours, so when Hannah said that this was a “must-do” I have to admit I was a little sceptical, but in almost no time I was convinced - jagged lava fields, craters, and sweeping plains of volcanic rock stretched further than I could see and it was honestly breathtaking!

We finished our time off in the park by heading to the cafe and visitor centre to see meat being cooked on the heat of the volcano and to get a display of the geysers. As we exited the park, there was a massive queue of cars waiting to come in, so we definitely made the right choice to come early!

We then headed to Tenesar, a small village just outside of Timanfaya National Park, to get a taste of one of the lesser-visited areas of the island. This sleepy village was an awesome little stop off and the waves were absolutely ferocious!

For lunch, we went to Majo Picón in Tinajo, where we had a tasty burger, a melt-in-the-mouth slow-cooked Iberico pork cheek and a sweet carrot cake. Hannah also managed to find hersel a new necklace in the town!

Our last stop of the day before heading back to Playa Blanca was one of the volcanic vineyards where we went on a wine tour to learn how the grapes are cultivated on the island, then we got to taste some of the wine!

We finished the day off in Playa Blanca with a lovely sunset (that looked just like the emoji!) and a glorious view of the full moon.
