The Queen Mary is remembered as one of history’s greatest ships - but her designs was far from perfect! Some curious engineering choices resulted in a few behavioural quirks. Today, shipbuilding has advanced to the stage that most of the deficiencies can be ironed out at the design stage and not at sea - so to explore the world of naval architecture and the delicate dance between efficiency and optimal design I spoke with legendary engineer and naval architect Stephen Payne to compare and contrast the Queen Mary of the 1930s with his most well-known creation, the Queen Mary 2.
