Luis (Luys) Milán was a Valencian nobleman, poet, and musician associated with the court of Germaine de Foix and Fernando de Aragón.
His Libro de música de vihuela de mano intitulado el maestro (The Teacher), published in 1536, is believed to be the first printed collection of instrumental music in Spain.
Milán’s music stands apart for its improvisatory spirit. He was likely self-taught in counterpoint, descending from a long tradition of aural improvisation among singer-instrumentalists. In El Maestro, he tells us that each piece was first improvised on the vihuela and later written down—essentially capturing the spontaneity of his own playing. His use of descriptive tempo markings—the earliest known in instrumental music—reveals an expressive sensibility.
